There have been more days like that than I care to admit.

Oh, I’d really prefer for you to think of me as having it all together. Waking before dawn all these past thirty-some years to reset my focus on Christ. Drinking in His Word and His presence. Changed. Refreshed.

But no, there have been too many days that my parched soul has responded first to something else.

Exhaustion. Laziness. An urgent deadline. To-do lists. Family demands.

And I push the thirst aside, sure I can quench it later. Or some other way. Through ministry or some quick prayers and a serving of yesterday’s manna. Dry leftovers.

But too many of those days, and life tends to take a funny turn. It’s so gradual that I barely feel it. Maybe a little at first, but then I grow used to a dry mouth, and the show must go on.

The thing is, as it all goes on, circumstances weigh heavier and mountains rise higher.

Irritations morph into serious offenses. Setbacks are equivalent to failures. Discouragement turns to despair.

Before long, joy and hope are missing entirely.

And they’re signs. Signs that our souls thirst. That they’ve gone too long without Living Water. That the Word that once saturated us has evaporated. That we must drink daily.

The biggest indicator of them all?

This pervasive thought… that if we could change our circumstances, we could finally be happy.

Happy Summer!

While my ideal summer involves breezes at the beach, good books, blue skies, and refreshing drinks, that’s not really happening so far. I may get a few of those precious days before summer’s over, but my reality involves plenty of work and varying degrees of stress. You too?

That’s okay, though. Because true rest happens on the inside, no matter what’s going on outside.

I need rest, and so do you. But it’s not about sitting on a beach chair. Well, not all the time, anyway.

It’s a beautiful thought, the new things God has planned for the year ahead.

Perhaps especially in light of 2014’s shadows.

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.  — Isaiah 43:19

God wants to do something new… if you’ll let Him.

2015 might feel awfully similar to 2014 so far.

The chores still need to be done, the meals must be made, the children need you, and strangely enough, you’re as weary as you were before the turning of this new calendar page.

But you have no idea how different, how new and fresh this season of life could be on that “way in the wilderness” or along the “streams in the wasteland.”

Maybe you feel trapped.

But God offers you freedom through choices, goals, and change — a new thing — this year.

“To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.

Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.

Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God”?

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Isaiah 40:25-31

Is your load too heavy today? Are you wondering where you’ll find the strength for all that lies ahead?

There is strength for the weary and power for the weak.

Our hope is in the Lord.

Nothing is too much for Him.

Whether you’re soaring, running, or walking, He’s got you.

Be renewed in Him, friend.

We’re so grateful our ways aren’t hidden from you, Lord. You see, you care, you empower. You are mighty, wise, and good. We place our trust in you today, thankful for the strength you promise. Amen.

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.

Ephesians 6:5-8

I’m not a slave. And I hope you’re not either.

But sometimes we feel we are.

Self-pity wells up and we wonder why no one appreciates all we do.

But Someone does.

Lord, teach us to serve YOU. Wholeheartedly.

We give You our messes, our meals, our laundry, and all the hard stuff.

Please change our attitudes. Empower us. Enable us to look past the people we’re serving… right into Your eyes.

Don’t let us forget we’re doing this for You.

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. It happens to all of us who follow Him… we think we’re headed in a good direction, maybe even great.

We can almost taste the sweet fruit of our labors — this stuff we’re doing for God’s glory.

And then it’s taken. It’s gone. Or we’re removed. Or it all goes wrong.

And it hurts.

Is it the end? Did we misstep? Misunderstand?

For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.

God sees you today. His eye is on you, His hand is poised to steady and strengthen you in the challenges ahead, and you will never leave His mind.


Heavenly Father, we thank you for your holy, unchanging nature that will never stop loving us, never stop showering your children with grace. Thank you that in our weakness, you are strong… that your eye, your hand, and your mind are constantly on us, proving again and again that your love is unfailing.

Strengthen our faith today. Help us trust completely in you and to find all that we need in you.

John 15:4-5

How easily I reverse this process… trying to produce fruit to prove (to myself, others, and even God) that I’m close to the Lord, forgetting it’s only through my relationship with Him that any fruit is possible!

Monday Prayer

Jesus, please help us today to abide in You. Let us not waste our breathe, our energy and our time doing anything apart from You. We confess we need You. Let us love and serve out of our relationship with You. Amen.
